March 1998 to February 2003 Community Fund, London Regional Manager
Community Fund (now part of Big Lottery Fund) distributed money to support charities and voluntary groups. It gave grants mainly to help meet the needs of those at greatest disadvantage and also to improve the quality of life in the community.
- Responsible for developing and implementing strategy in London, managing grant-making to voluntary organisations working in London (budget of £26 million), research, evaluation and development activities, external relations, including liaising with MPs and the media. Led an office of 40 staff with office budget of £1 million.
- Lead senior operational manager on corporate personnel issues, including restructuring communication and development functions across England, job evaluation.
- Lead staff member advising London Regional Committee, recruiting and induction new members. Member of Awards for All Joint Regional Committee. Executive member of London Funders’ Group.
- Led projects to evaluate impact of funding to refugee communities and to improve support to black and minority ethnic organisations in accessing funds and managing funded projects.
1995 - 1998 Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) Director of Eastern European Partnership
VSO is Europe’s largest volunteer-sending development agency. It has well developed systems for managing a complex range of activities in recruitment, training and assignment of volunteers, planning and administration of development programmes, monitoring, evaluation and fundraising. East European Partnership was a self-financing division, working in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.
- Responsible for overall strategy and planning of work in Eastern Europe, managing programmes, securing funding, coordinating marketing and publicity. Managed a team of 14 people and a budget of £1 million.
- Member of Senior Management Team, contributing to corporate strategy development.
- Chair of BOND’s (British Overseas NGOs for Development) East European Group
- Member of Working Group on trustee governance. Chair of Equal Opportunities Steering Group and Management side representative in union discussions.
